What does the SOSA organization wish to accomplish?This organization is dedicated to preserving the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area view-shed; to further maintain the existing rural and scenic character of Underwood, Washington, and surrounding communities in Washington and Oregon; and works to preserve the intent of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area Act.

What does SOSA wish to accomplish regarding this project?Our current focus is to eliminate or reduce the impacts to the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area and Underwood which will be caused by the proposed Saddleback Wind Turbine Project. Back to Top
What are the facts regarding each turbine?SDS has indicated that they plan to use turbines which are described here. Of the three choices in size, they anticipate using the medium height version (78 meters to the hub). Back to Top
What are the facts regarding the visual impact?SDS provided a view-shed impact analysis, which indicated that one or more turbines will be seen from most of the mid-Columbia area (Hood River, Odel, White Salmon, Underwood, Husum, etc.). The turbines will be visible from several designated scenic viewpoints, including Cook-Underwood Road and Interstate 84. The view-shed impact analysis graphic provided by SDS is:
What are the facts regarding the overall project?The Saddleback Project, proposed by SDS Lumber partnering with Puget Sound Energy, calls for 44 turbines, each over 420 feet tall, a generator building, and staging area. They will be placed running north-south, spread across a distance of approximately 2.5 miles, as shown here. They are aligned along the Chemawa Hill ridge line, outside the national scenic boundary (60 feet at their closest), and spanning across the power lines that run east-west behind Underwood Mountain.
